WISEflow malware scanning now available to customers

According to ENISA, the EU agency for cybersecurity, malware was the second-most widespread form of cyberattack in 2022. While many of our customers have end-point protection for staff computers and virus scanning for their mail services, participants often do not have their own end-point protection in place.

Without proper end-point protection, participants’ computers are open to being infected by malware, and uploaded papers could be infected, too. If an external assessor downloads an infected file, this could cause a serious security incident. This is why we have developed a malware scanning service for WISEflow.

Files submitted by participants in either FLOWassign or FLOWhandin can now be scanned and quarantined, as well as flagged for other users, to minimise the potential effects of malware. If a malicious file is detected among submissions, it will not be viewable or downloadable to users within WISEflow. The affected participants and managers of the flow will then receive a notification that their files have been identified for quarantine. This not only protects the participant, but also everyone else using the flow, and allows the manager to take action to resolve the situation.

We know that many customers have automated their cybersecurity setup, for example, with SIEM, so UNIwise will be offering customers integrations within their own cybersecurity services, combining our malware scanning service with the WISEflow API.

Kurt Gammelgaard Nielsen, Director of Development and Maintenance at UNIwise, commented on the development:

‘I have been chairing IT-security boards in the EU for many years and have witnessed many attack vectors used on educational institutions; malware has for many years been a route of attack because of the open nature of educational institutions. I am delighted we are now able to offer to mitigate this attack vector for some of our workflows and with thousands of files shared within an institution. Our service will also fit into any given institution with a high maturity within IT security because it can be integrated into other IT-security flows.’
